Introduction

This book consists of course notes and assignment for CEEn 201: Sustainable Infrastructure at Brigham Young University. The course introduces students to the triple bottom line of sustainability — economic prosperity, environmental preservation, and social equity — as it applies to the topic of infrastructure in the United States and around the world. The students explore these topics through investigating and discussing case studies.

The course also serves as a point of instruction for the engineering finance problems the students will encounter on the Fundamentals of Engineering and Professional Engineer examinations. Additionally, this course helps the BYU Civil Engineering program meet ABET student outcome 4:

an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
