Abstract

Notes and Assignments for Civil Engineering 361: Introduction to Transportation Engineering at BYU

Preface

These notes are designed to work as a textbook for a semester-long introduction to transportation engineering class. The topics included are those a student will encounter in the transportation portions of the FE and PE examinations, as well as topics of general and emerging interest such as sustainability and asset management.

The notes and examples are written to be as simple and straightforward as possible; citations are kept to a minimum, and primarily function to instruct the reader as to where they can learn more detail on the topic. The examples are largely drawn from situations in and around Provo, Utah where I live and teach at Brigham Young University.

These notes and homework experiments are inspired by Fundamentals of Transportation Engineering by Fricker & Whitford (2019), and derivative work is used with permission. We are grateful for their support across many years, and hope that this project honors their memory.
